Montana Elk hide
Here is a pretty dang cool barktanned with a currently unknown species of Rumex, or otherwise known as Dock. It might be the Tanners Dock species or the Rumex hymenosepalus which is native to Montana.
I spent several hours harvesting this root out by the Missoula Airport this summer, and this is the root used for the tanning. Then chopping and drying the roots in the open air.
It’s been barktanning for about 4 months since the temps were low in the solution.
The original color twas an epic buckskin yellow, and the mimosa used for the last month of tanning darkened the color, yet it’s still lovely and beautiful.
The membrane of hide, flesh side or non grain side, has a score mark along spine likely from trying to peel the hide from the spinal column. Otherwise this hide would make epic straps if cut in spirals around the hide.
If making long cuts parallel to spine w/o making spiral cuts, this hide is great for this.
